Llandyfaelog substation
Developer: National Grid Electricity Transmission (NGET), NGED and Green GEN Cymru
Large new substation complex south of Carmarthen. The main 400kV substation will be owned and operated by NGET. It will be located next to the existing pylon lines. The plan includes two new pylons and replacement of an existing one. Adjoining and connected on the same site would be two other 132kV substations, for NGED and Green GEN Cymru, which will be subject to their own separate planning applications. They are intended to provide grid connections for the Towy-Usk and Towy-Teifi lines, plus connection for Glyn Cothi via a new wood pole line.
Pre-application consultation was late 2035. Planning application submitted to Carmarthenshire County Council, reference number PL/10552.
The development involves construction of a single substation platform of 260 x 640 metres. The NGET part is on the western side in a fenced compound of 155 by 602 metres. Immediately next to that are the areas for Green GEN Cymru and NGED. The NGET 400kV substation will be of the Air Insulated type with up to eight Supergrid Transformers. There will also be a control building, amenities building and storage units within the compound, which will be secured by a 3.4 metre high electrified fence and CCTV.
The existing 400kV Overhead Line will be modified for connection the substation, involving two new pylons and replacement of an existing one. The pylons will be up to about 62 metres high.
Access for construction and operation will be from the A484, with a new internal roadway and car parking.
Green GEN's plans express the intention for their lines to be operation by 2029. The connection date for Glyn Cothi is given as 2036, but an accelerated date for early 2030's has been requested.
