Other Connection Lines

Some proposed wind farms will use wood pole grid connections, others have not yet been clearly defined but will probably be the same. These connection lines are treated as separate planning applications, even though they are critical to the viability of the projects. In some cases few details are available or only the final connection point is known, for example from the NESO TEC register.

Although not steel pylons lines, some may be significant developments in themselves, while others are important feeds into the main pylon lines.

Bryn Gilwern wood pole overhead line connection

proposed Bryn Gilwern wood pole line

Developer: Green GEN Cymru

132kV overhead line on wood poles, connecting Bryn Gilwern Energy Park to the proposed Towy Usk switching station near Hundred House. Approximately 5 kilometres, 43 wood poles, typical height between 14 and 16 metres and span between poles of 110 metres, both variable depending on terrian.

Non-statutory consultation in autumn 2024, initial submission to PEDW in November 2025, statutory consultation expected in 2026 followed by full application. Construction target is 2028.

Garreg Fawr wood pole overhead line connection

Developer: Green GEN Cymru

132kV overhead line on wood poles, connecting Garreg Fawr Energy Park to the proposed Towy Usk pylon line.

This project has been announced by Green GEN, but no details of the route or connction location have beed released. Garreg Fawr is a Bute Energy proposal.

Our best guess at the moment is that the route might run from somewhere near the top of Cwm Cefn-gweision or Cwm Llech, south-west and then west towards Halfway, avoiding the Sennybridge Training Area and roughly following the A40 to a connection point north of Llandovery. The connection to the Towy-Line will need a switching station or junction equipment of some kind, as yet unplanned.

Non-statutory consultation due in early 2026, followed by an initial submission to PEDW. Statutory consultation is targetted for 2027 followed by the full application. Construction target is 2029, for functional operation in 2030.

Bryn Rhudd Energy Park grid connection

Developer: Green GEN Cymru

There is virtually no available information about this grid connection, other than it will be via Green GEN's Towy-Teifi line. We would guess it will involve an overhead wood pole line running to the start of the pylon line, connecting at the same point as the Lan Fawr wood pole section. There is no indication of the route it would take. Bryn Rhudd Energy Park is a Bute Energy development.

Waun Hesgog and Esgair Galed grid connection

Developer: Green GEN Cymru

Green GEN Cymru have been named as providing the grid connections for both Waun Hesgog and Esgair Galed Energy Parks, but no details have been released. They will probably connect to the Vrynwy-Frankton pylon line at the Cors y Garreg substation. These would need new overhead wood pole lines running in the direction of Llyn Lort Energy Park. They might separate lines or partially combined.

The only information we discovered so far is a working document from 2024, which shows possible route corridor options :-

Bryn Cadwgan grid connection

Developer: unknown

The proposed Bryn Cadwgan wind farm, by Galileo Empower, is located close to Lan Fawr. The planned grid connection is to Llandyfaelog, however it is currently unknown whether this will make use of the Towy-Teifi line or an alternative.

Glyn Cothi grid connection

Developer: unknown

The Glyn Cothi Wind Farm proposed by Trydan Gwyrdd Cymru is close to the Towy-Teifi line but our understanding is that it will not be used for connection, instead a new 132kV wood pole line to the Llandyfaelog substation will be constructed. It is assumed this will require a separate planning application.
